Wyomissing
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Wyomissing High School is the only secondary school serving the Wyomissing Area School District. It is located in the borough of Wyomissing, Pennsylvania, the school boasts an enrollment, 7th to 12th of 950 students. In 1909, the Wyomissing school district was founded, with classes being taught in a private residence. The current high school was constructed in 1940, as part of Franklin Roosevelt's depression recovery program, the Works Projects Administration. The building was expanded to meet the growing student body in 1965, and was renovated in 1994.
There are 567 sections of 183 courses in basic core areas and in a wide variety of electives. The school offers 30 honors, and 12 AP, Advanced Placement courses in the 2003 to 04 school year, there were 221 AP exams given to 104 students. The school offers a number of student clubs and organizations in order to expand learning beyond classroom. Wyomissing's sports teams have traditionally been among the strongest in Berks County, since the early 1990s, the school has won state championships in boys' soccer in 1994, girls cross country in 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, girl’s tennis in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and boys' track in 2003.
The athletics programs include baseball, basketball, men's, basketball, women's, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, men's and women's, tennis, men's and women's, track, volleyball, wrestling. Wyomissing High School is a dynamic school that promotes academic achievement, high expectations, respect, unity, and safety.
Wyomissing High Schoolstrives to develop specific goals and high academic standards, using communication and commitment within a shared learning environment. The mission of Wyomissing High School is to offer an environment in which all students will acquire the necessary skills to become responsible thinkers who appreciate diversity and are productive citizens in their community.
