Great Neck South High School
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Great Neck South High School is a four-year comprehensive public high school located in Great Neck, New York, United States, as part of the Great Neck School District. Great Neck South was rated the 31st best school in Newsweek Magazine's recent listing of America's Best High Schools in the May 8, 2006, issue, with each twelfth grader averaging 4.321 AP, Advanced Placement courses. The Principal of school is Mr. Randolph H. Ross.
Great Neck South is widely renowned for its strong math program and math team. Behind teachers such as Joyce O’Connor and Thomas Weisswange, the math team runs the league table of the Nassau County Interscholatic Math League, and is second only to Stuyvesant High School in state wide competitions.
The music department, headed by Mr. Michael Schwartz, presents a full scale opera performed by the students each year. To date, it is the only public high school opera company in the U.S. The production consists of a full cast and pits orchestra, and is usually performed on the last weekend of March. The mission of Great Neck South High School is to provide their students with opportunities to obtain the skills needed to become productive, responsible citizens, capable of making positive contributions to a changing society.
