George Washington
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district. George Washington was established in 1956. It is a public high school in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Dr. Ralph Plagman is the principal of the school and Denny Goettel is the associate principal of the school. Warriors are the mascot of the school. George Washington’s academics include physical education, special education, science and foreign language. In 2003, a large wing of six classrooms and six science laboratories was added to the southwest corner of the building. At the same time, a new band room was completed and the entire original music area was remodeled to house the growing vocal and string orchestra programs. The mission at Washington High School, in partnership with families, is to provide a safe and orderly climate in which students may strive for academic excellence, participate in a variety of co-curricular activities, and celebrate the diverse cultures which comprise their community. The school also provides their students with opportunities to obtain the skills needed to become productive, responsible citizens, capable of making positive contributions to a changing society.
