Firestone
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Harvey S. Firestone High School is a public high school located on the northwest side of Akron, Ohio. It is 1 of 7 high schools in the Akron Public Schools district. The senior high school currently offers programs such as the visual and performing arts, international baccalaureate program, and advanced placement classes. Opened in 1963, Firestone is named after the founder of the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, Harvey Firestone. Firestone has been named as one of the top 1,000 public high schools in the U.S for its AP and IB programs by Newsweek in 2003 and 2005. The current principal is LaVonne Humphrey. Firestone courses are business education, career education, English, family and consumer sciences, visual and performing arts, foreign language, health and physical education, mathematics, science, social studies, classes for non-credit etc.
Some of the programs and extra curriculums at Firestone are Spanish Club, French Club, Thespian Club, Student Council, Winter Drumline, Marching Season, Drumline, Winter Guard, Colorguard, Marching Band, Concert Band, Symphonic Band, Jazz Band etc. In there Athletics include Cheerleading, Winter Sports Programs, Spring Sports Programs etc. It is the mission of the Firestone High School learning community to prepare our students to attain their highest degree of academic success.
