East Chapel Hill
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district. East Chapel Hill High School is the second high school in the town of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The school's principal is David J. Thaden. Its mascot is the wildcat. East holds multiple 3A and 4A championships and is home to many award-winning extracurricular groups. Many of its sudents take AP, Advanced Placement courses and East has subsequently been ranked in Newsweek's Top 100 High Schools for many years. East Chapel Hill High School has a professional staff of 145, with more than 60 percent holding a Master's Degree and five with Doctorate Degrees. In 2001, then freshman, David Kann received an honorable mention in the North Carolina Muddy Water's Essay Contest earning himself, the school's science department, and his freshman biology teacher, Gail Boyarsky, each a dollars 600 combined prize from all levels of the competition. During July, 2006, an East Chapel Hill High 16 year old rising senior, Arnav Tripathy, won a gold medal at the International Mathematical Olympiad in Slovenia The mission of East Chapel Hill High School is to provide their students with opportunities to obtain the skills needed to become productive, responsible citizens, capable of making positive contributions to a changing society.
