South Texas High School for Health Professions
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
South Texas High School for Health Professions, also known as Med High, is a high school in Texas in the United States. In 2006, it was placed 91st on Newsweek's Top 1200 High Schools list. The school serves as an alternative to larger municipal high schools for students interested in professing in medicine. Open enrollment has been the school's policy for many years, though application is required. South Texas High School for Health Professions is part of the South Texas Independent School District.
The students are required to take a Health, Science, and Technology class as one of their requirements. The school has prominent partnerships with Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine. Its sister school The Science Academy of South Texas, also known as SciTech, presides on the same campus. Both schools are serviced by Biblioteca Las Americas, located at equal distance from both schools.
South Texas High School is highly academic and offers not only several Advanced Placement courses, but a wide variety of athletic and extra curricular opportunities for all students.
