Northport
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Northport High School is a four-year secondary school located in Northport, New York. Irene McLaughlin is the principal of this high school. There large common area in the center of the school is the heart of Northport High School life. Four wells, each dedicated to one of the grade levels, are filled with students who are completing homework, talking with each other, planning activities and making the place special. On many occasions, there are activities in the commons that involve displays of student work, interesting demonstrations and fund raising efforts of the many clubs, college and career fairs, and informational sessions by outside groups and agencies.
Everyday, the students run radio station plays music selected and introduced by students in their radio club. The commons comes alive early in the morning and continues to serve as the hub of the school until the late afternoon when much of the activity slows. In there clubs include art club, fashion club, German club, law club, French club, book club etc.
It functions as the high school for the Northport-East Northport Union Free School District which serves the communities of Northport, Eatons Neck, Asharoken and much of East Northport, all located in the town of Huntington. It is the only high school in the nation to offer the International Baccalaureate program, two national academy programs, more than 20 advanced placement courses, a science research program and a state model law program. Its athletic teams are known as the tigers and lady tigers.
Northport High School prides itself on a course catalog that boasts nearly four hundred courses. In addition to the major subject areas of English, Math, Science, Social Studies, World Languages and Physical Education, students may opt to take classes in Art, Music, Family and Consumer Science, Technology, and Business. It is dedicated to promoting student excellence by providing a rigorous academic and vocational program within a positive learning environment.
