High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place.
 
Northern Highlands Regional High School is a regional public high school and school district in Allendale, Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The high school serves students in grades 9 to12 from Allendale, Ho-Ho-Kus, Saddle River, and Upper Saddle River. As of the 2004-05 school year, enrollment was approximately 1,255 with 263 students enrolled in the 12th grade. There chief school administrator is Robert M. McGuire and principal of the school is John Keenan and Joseph Occhino is the Vice-Principal of the school.      
 
Among 264 graduates in 2005, 256 planned to attend college. Of those attending college, 250 planned to attend four-year colleges and 6 to attend two-year colleges. Northern Highlands Regional High School is accredited by the middle states association of colleges and schools and by the new jersey department of education. The school newspaper is called the highland fling. During the 1986-87 school year, Northern Highlands Regional High School was awarded the blue ribbon school award of excellence by the United States department of education, the highest award an American school can receive.
 
Northern Highlands Regional High School was the 7th ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 316 schools statewide, in New Jersey monthly magazine's September 2006 cover story on the state's top public high schools. The school mission is to provide a safe, nurturing and stimulating environment dedicated to human development. To care about all individuals of their community, their growth and development, their ideas and aspirations. To create an administration that efficiently and effectively serves the needs of students and faculty with the best interests of the school in mind. Foster a highly motivated and innovative staff that inspires students to discover and perpetuate the joy of learning.

Perpetually evaluate and adjust the educational process to ensure its relevance to current and future needs. Incorporate conceptual and technological advances both as the object of learning and as toolds to facilitate learning and encourage students to appreciate and contribute to their culturally diverse society.
