Classical
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Classical High School was founded in 1843, is a college-preparatory public magnet school in the Providence School District, in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. It was originally an all male school, but has since become co-education. It has been rated High Performing and Sustaining by its performance in 2005 on the New Standards Reference Exam, placing it third highest in the state. The school is directly next door to another public high school, Central High School, with which it shares a plaza, as well as its plumbing, heating and electrical systems from underground. Classical is across the street from the Central Administration building of the Providence Public School Department.
Classical High School integrates a rich and challenging program of study in the arts, sciences, languages and humanities. In addition, Classical incorporates a wide variety of extracurricula activities that include academic competitions, content specific field-trip experiences, athletic programs and sports events, art presentations, theatre productions, music groups/shows and many diverse student clubs and organizations. The current Principal is Mrs. Cheryl Gomes.
Classical's faculty and administration are committed to a continuous effort to improve and enhance academic programs and to promote and support high academic expectations for each student. As a result, Classical High School continues to rank as one of the highest performing public high schools nationwide and its graduate students go on to attend many of the top and most prestigious colleges and universities in the country. Classical encourages its students to pursue academic, artistic, athletic and personal growth so they will experience success in colleges and universities and will demonstrate excellence and leadership within the community.
