Booker T. Washington
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Booker T. Washington High School is a high school in Tulsa, Oklahoma and is well known for its achievement in academics, fine arts and sports. It was named after the African-American education pioneer Booker T. Washington. Dr. Debi Boyles is the principal. Booker T. Washington High School was founded in 1913 with an enrollment of fourteen students and a staff of two teachers. The school served African American high school students during segregation.
The school offers eight world languages namely Spanish, French, German, Italian, Latin, Chinese, Japanese and Russian. With the exception of Italian, all of these languages are offered through level V. In 2005, 81 percent of the student body was enrolled in a world language, and 10 percent was enrolled in a level IV language class, or higher. Booker T. Washington has an active exchange program with China, Japan, Russia, Germany, Mexico, Paraguay, Venezuela, India and many European countries. The mission of High School for the administration, faculty, staff, students, and community is to promote academic excellence by providing opportunities and instruction through which all students can become proficient.
