Staples High School
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Staples High School is a public secondary school, located in the town of Westport, Connecticut, USA. Staples High School is named after Horace Staples who founded the school in 1884. The school was moved to its current location on North Avenue in 1958, and was recently expanded and renovated into an all new facility. John M. Dodig is the Principal of the school.
Staples High School was originally built in 1884 by Horace Staples, a high wealth savvy trader, who built a three-story brick building on Riverside Avenue, just south of downtown Westport, Connecticut. The building contained several classrooms, a science laboratory, and a library. During this project, many of the original buildings were demolished as the new school was built on their original footings. The project was completed in September 2006.
Staples Special Education Department offers a comprehensive program of education and support services for students who are eligible for services. Special Education should be considered only after adjustments and remedial strategies have been designed, implemented and evaluated in the regular educational program through a pre-referral process.
Their athletic program has a long standing tradition of excellence. Last year alone, they won 3 state championships as well as several FCIAC and divisional titles. The combination of talented, hard working athletes mixed with an outstanding coaching staff has made for a formidable tradition. Staples as a result, have been recognized with several awards for excellence in competition, sportsmanship and teamwork. Staples High School mission is community of learners engaged in a quest for academic excellence and committed to civic and social responsibility.
