Overland High School
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
As school opened on September 5th, 1978, rented furniture, large empty spaces, 430 freshmen and their little island in the green locker greeted them. Soon Overland began to come alive as classes, athletics, activities, and friendships were started.
Since Overland has opened, the yearbook has won 11 national awards, the newspaper has won 7 national awards, and 21 athletic teams or individuals have won state championships. Overland's FBLA, Future Business Leaders of America chapter, DECA, Department of Education and Curriculum Affairs chapter and Speech and Debate teams have also won both state and national awards.
Overland High School, OHS is proud of its athletics program. Out of the 10 schools in the Centennial League, Overland is the smallest, it continues to produce a disproportionate number of elite athletes. Several OHS graduates have gone on to become professional athletes. Those athletes are Brian Kelly, Sean Moran, Scott Bently, Matt Jordan, TJ Cunningham, Eddie Gill and Matt Chojnacki. It is Overland's philosophy that its athletes compete at the highest level while still retaining good sportsmanship. Overland looks forward to continuing it's legacy of producing world-class athletes.
The mission of Overland High School for the administration, faculty, staff, students, and community is to promote academic excellence by providing opportunities and instruction through which all students can become proficient in literacy and math.
