Miami Palmetto
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Miami Palmetto is a top high school situated in the United States. Its principal is Howard Weiner. Miami Palmetto is a nationally recognized senior high school located on 23 acres in the Village of Pinecrest, Florida in southeastern Miami-Dade County, Florida and is part of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools district. Miami Palmetto itself has changed a great deal in many respects since it was built in 1958. Miami Palmetto serves a diverse population both culturally and socio-economically. Palmetto students score higher on both state and national assessments than any other standard public school in Miami-Dade County.
According to Newsweek's List of the 1,000 Top U.S. Schools 2006, Miami Palmetto is ranked at 67th in the nation, 13th in the state of Florida. This ranking is based on a ratio devised by Jay Mathews, which takes the number of Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests taken by all students at a school in 2005 and divides it by the number of graduating seniors. Miami Palmetto has two publications the newspaper, The Panther and the yearbook, Palm Echo. The newspaper is published monthly while the yearbook is published annually.
Miami Palmetto School is highly academic and offers not only several Advanced Placement courses, but a wide variety of athletic and extra curricular opportunities for all students.
