Lakewood High School is the third largest of eighteen comprehensive high schools in Jefferson County School District R-1, the largest K-12 school system in Colorado serving 86,000 students. Lakewood High School, LHS has a strong tradition of community support and the student population comes from awide variety of ethnic, academic, and geographic backgrounds. The current building sits on a 40-acre site in Lakewood, Colorado, located directly west of Denver. This facility and site has housed Lakewood High since 1958, but the structure has recently undergone a 4.5 million dollar renovation including an update of the auditorium, choir and music rooms and weights facility. In February 2006, the district began a 28 million dollars construction project that will replace all remaining areas of the school, to be completed by November 2007.
 
Lakewood High School is a public high school, grades 9 through 12, with a student enrollment of over 1800. LHS has 63 classrooms. Including multi-purpose rooms, facilities for team teaching and large groups, and traditional classrooms. Two gymnasiums, a state of the art. Weight room, athletic fields and courts are also available. The school library contains approximately 10,000 volumes. The school calendar, composed of two eighteen-week semesters, is 176 days in length. In 1993-94, the school adopted a block schedule consisting of eight 90-minute classes with 1 to 4 and 5 to 8 periods meeting on alternate days.
 
Lakewood High School is identified as a Renaissance School whose goal. Is to improve student performance at all levels and recognize outstanding teachers. Lakewood High School graduated its first International Baccalaureate, IB students in 1999. Begun in 1995, this program draws students from all over Jefferson County as well as outside the district.

Lakewood High School will provide an academic and creative environment in which every person is valued as an individual, challenged as a learner, and inspired to contribute to society.
