Grissom
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Grissom High School opened in 1969. With a band enrollment that averages 200 to 250 students, the program now includes the marching band, two symphonic bands, a concert band, two jazz bands, and several instrumental chamber ensembles. William J. Connell was named Director of Bands at Grissom High School in July 1986. Grissom High School principal is Mr. B. T. Drake.
The Instrumental Music Department at Grissom strives to maintain a balanced program in all facets of music education, including the development of the individual musician. Over the years, the Grissom Band program has consistently produced excellent musicians who are in demand by colleges and universities throughout the Southeast and many parts of the country. The tradition of excellence held by the Grissom High School Band program developed through the hard work and dedication of past members and directors Mr. Dave Ward, Mr. James Sparks and Mr. Ronald Rich.
Grissom High School Boosters are currently hard at work on fund raising programs which are vital to the success of the team. Grissom student also participated in different kinds of sports. In that they offer baseball, basketball, Football, Men's Soccer. Their student won many awards for different games. Awards and recognition’s have come often to the Band as whole as well as individual members. Numerous superior medals are awarded to Grissom students at the Solo and Ensemble Festival each year. Usually more than 40 Grissom students are placed in one of the Alabama All-State Bands and several students are selected for the Alabama All-State Jazz Band each year. Erick Chomskis is the Head Coach of the Girl's Soccer team.
The mission of Grissom High School is to prepare students for responsible participation as citizens in a global technological society by providing all students opportunities to achieve their highest academic, social and creative potential using diverse tools of learning.
