Cab Calloway School of the Arts
CCSA, Cab Calloway School of the Arts was established in 1992. It is located in Wilmington, Delaware USA. It is operated by the Red Clay Consolidated School District that focuses on a strong academic curriculum along with an education in the arts. Cab Calloway encompasses both a middle school and a high school, with students ranging from 6th grade to 12th grade, and each student chooses a particular concentration in a field of arts that they study through high school. Dean Julie Rumschlag is returning for her eighth year at Cab Calloway.
It initially started out as a middle school called, the Middle School for the creative and performing arts. The school was named after Cab Calloway in 1993. The art department at Cab consists of stage tech, dance, visual arts, communication arts, and vocal, drama and band divisions. It shares a building built in 1960 formerly belonging to Wilmington High School. The Charter School of Wilmington rents one wing of the second floor and the entire third floor of the building. Cab Calloway and the Charter School of Wilmington offer several classes that share enrollment. Cab Calloway students may take higher-level French courses, as well as the AP, Advanced Placements Calculus courses offered by Charter.
Many are involved in after school activities and others participate in out of school activities that involve other Cab students because of similar interests. Science Olympiad, which is headed by Reese Rigby, is a successful extracurricular group that competes against other schools in the area for excellence in science. The school-counseling program at Cab Calloway School of the Arts focuses on the needs, interests, and issues related to the stages of student growth through academic, career, and personal and social development.
CCSA was awarded the Delaware Governor's Award for the Arts faculty. Six awards are given out of 80 nominations. Four CCSA students received 2005 Michael C. Ferguson Scholarship Awards for their outstanding achievement on the spring 2005 DSTP,Delaware Student Testing Program tests. A 2005 senior was selected as a candidate for the United States Presidential Scholars Program, one of the nation's highest honors for high school students.
CCSA, Cab Calloway School of the Arts is devoted to the education and individual improvement of every candidate. The school attempts to be aware and responsive in its program offerings in order to mirror the requirements of the changing world.
