Buchholz High School
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Buchholz High School, also B.H.S. or F. W. Buchholz High School is a high school in Gainesville, Florida. B.H.S. is one of seven high schools in Alachua County. It is the largest of the public high schools in a portion of Gainesville that is classified as Urban Fringe of Mid-size City. The B.H.S. mascot is a bobcat. In 2005, it had an enrollment of 2530 students and 102 classroom teachers.
Buchholz High School believes deeply in the value, dignity and uniqueness of each student. They work to identify and develop individual potential through a wide variety of curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular offerings. Students are encouraged to appreciate and understand different cultures as they prepare to take their places in a world community. They encourage enjoyment of the arts as a way to enhance students' understanding of themselves and their world. Acquisition of life skills emphasizes responsible decision making for healthy life styles and positive leisure time activities.
Buchholz contains two magnet programs, the Academy of Finance and the Academy of Entrepreneurship. As a result, the school contains a credit union known as the Bobcat Branch, which is division of the Florida Credit Union, and operated, by students in the Academy of Finance, and the Spirit Spot, a retail outlet whose products are envisioned and marketed by the Academy of Entrepreneurship.
Athletics department contain many sports like basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, volleyball, wrestling, weightlifting and tennis. The school sport team won many awards. Buchholz Mu Alpha Theta won the FAMAT, theFlorida Association of Mu Alpha Theta State Championship in 2005 and 2006, placed second in the nation in 2005 as well as in 2006. They will attempt to win the 2007 convention in Tampa, Florida.
The mission of Buchholz High School for the administration, faculty, staff, students, and community is to promote academic excellence by providing opportunities and instruction through which all students can become proficient in literacy.
