Lakeland
The United States of America is a country in North America that extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and shares land borders with Canada and Mexico. The United States is a federal constitutional republic, with its capital in Washington, D.C., District of Columbia.
Lakeland is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States, located approximately midway between Tampa and Orlando. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 78,452 inhabitants and is the largest city in Polk County. According to the 2004 U.S. Census Bureau's Estimates, the city had a population of 88,357 inhabitants. As of 2005, the population is approaching 90,000 inhabitants. Lakeland's sister cities are Richmond Hill in Canada, Imabari in Japan, and Balti in Moldova.
Lakeland was first settled in the 1870s, developed as the railroad reached the area in 1884, and was incorporated January 1, 1885. The town was founded by Abraham Munn, who purchased 80 acres of land in what is now downtown Lakeland in 1882 and platted the land for the town in 1884. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 133.3 square kilometers.
In the city the population was spread out with 21.4 percent under the age of 18, 10.3 percent from 18 to 24, 24.7 percent from 25 to 44, 20.6 percent from 45 to 64, and 23.0 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 86.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.1 males.
Lakeland is also known as the city of best geographical environment and has traced its origins back to prehistoric times. Today, one can also learn about its history, from its earliest times and can also enjoy its natural beauty concealed by the beautiful landscapes.
