Yankton is a municipality in Yankton County, South Dakota, United States. In 2000, the population of the city was 13,528 and an area of 20.7 square kilometers. It is the county seat of Yankton County. Yankton was the original capital of Dakota Territory. Yankton is located on the Missouri River just downstream of the Gavins Point Dam and Lewis and Clark Lake and just upstream of the confluence with the James River.  
 
The history of Yankton is long and illustious, stretching back hundreds of glourious years. In the city the population was spread out with 23.4 percent under the age of 18, 9.8 percent from 18 to 24, 28.2 percent from 25 to 44, 21.4 percent from 45 to 64, and 17.2 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 95.0 males.
