Oakland, founded in 1852, is the eighth biggest city in California and the county seat of Alameda County. It lies on the eastern shore of San Francisco Bay, nestled against the Berkeley Hills and bordering five of the East Bay Regional Parks. Oakland is located in the San Francisco Bay Area, the fifth most populated metropolitan area in the United States. In 2006, the population of the city was 411,755 and an area of 202.4 square kilometers. Oakland's climate is typified by the temperate and seasonally arid Mediterranean climate.
 
In the city the population was spread out with 25.0 percent under the age of 18, 9.7 percent from 18 to 24, 34.0 percent from 25 to 44, 20.9 percent from 45 to 64, and 10.5 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
