Newark, nicknamed The Brick City, is the biggest city in New Jersey, United States and the county seat of urban Essex County. In 2004, the population of the city was 280,451 and an area of 67.3 square kilometers. It is located approximately five miles west of Manhattan and two miles north of Staten Island both parts of New York City.  
 
Newark was founded in 1666 by Connecticut Puritans led by Robert Treat, making it the third-oldest major city in the United States. Newark was a relatively big town in the colonial era, known for its good beer, ciders and tanned leather goods. The middle 19th century saw continued growth and diversification of Newark's industrial base.   

In the city the population was spread out with 27.9 percent under the age of 18, 12.1 percent from 18 to 24, 32.0 percent from 25 to 44, 18.7 percent from 45 to 64, and 9.3 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.1 males.
