Natchez is the biggest city in, and the county seat of Adams County, Mississippi. Adams County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi.  In 2000, the population of the city was 18,464 and an area of 35.9 square kilometers. It was founded in 1716 and is the southern terminus of the Natchez Trace Parkway. Natchez is well-known in American history for its role in the development of the Old Southwest, mainly with respect to its location on the Mississippi River.
 
In the city the population was spread out with 26.5 percent under the age of 18, 8.8 percent from 18 to 24, 24.3 percent from 25 to 44, 22.4 percent from 45 to 64, and 18.0 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 81.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 76.7 males.
