Fairhope is a city in Baldwin County, Alabama, on a sloping plateau, along the cliffs and shoreline of Mobile Bay. As of the 2000 census, the population of the city is 12,480. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 28.5 square kilometers.
 
Fairhope was founded in November, 1894 as a utopian single tax colony by the Fairhope Industrial Association are a group of 28 followers of economist Henry George who had incorporated earlier that year in Des Moines, Iowa.
 
In the city the population was spread out with 21.6 percent under the age of 18, 5.4 percent from 18 to 24, 23.8 percent from 25 to 44, 25.6 percent from 45 to 64, and 23.7 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 44 years. For every 100 females there were 83.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 78.3 males.
