Lawrence is a river city in Douglas County, Kansas, 41 miles west by south of Kansas City, along the banks of both the Kaw and Wakarusa Rivers. It is considered governmentally independent and is the principal city within the Lawrence, Kansas Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 2000, the population of the city was 80,098 and an area of 74.3 square kilometers, making it the sixth biggest city in Kansas. Lawrence is the county seat of Douglas County and is the home of the University of Kansas and Haskell Indian Nations University.
 
Lawrence was founded in 1854 for the New England Emigrant Aid Company, by Charles Robinson. In the city the population was spread out with 18.6 percent under the age of 18, 30.7 percent from 18 to 24, 28.5 percent from 25 to 44, 15.1 percent from 45 to 64, and 7.2 percent who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 25 years. For every 100 females there were 98.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 98.2 males.
