The United States of America is a country in North America that extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and shares land borders with Canada and Mexico. The United States is a federal constitutional republic, with its capital in Washington, D.C., District of Columbia.
Durham is a city in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. It is the county seat of Durham County, the home of Duke University, North Carolina Central University, Durham Technical Community College, and the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics. It is also a cornerstone of the Research Triangle region of North Carolina and the fifth largest city in the state by population.
In the history of Durham, Durham originated in 1853 with the search for a suitable railroad depot for the North Carolina Railroad between Wilson and Hillsborough. An earlier post office known as Herndon's existed in the area from 1827, and another at nearby Prattsburg was established in 1836. The landowners at Prattsburg refused to sell land to the railroad. Somewhat further to the northwest, a country physician named Bartlett S. Durham lived and practiced along the route. He donated land to the railroad, which named the subsequent depot Durham Station.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 245.8 square kilometers. In the city the population was spread out with 22.9 percent under the age of 18, 14.1 percent from 18 to 24, 35.6 percent from 25 to 44, 18.1 percent from 45 to 64, and 9.3 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 92.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.1 males.

Durham experiences a boom with day tourists, owing to the clear air, town character with rich culture, high quality of life and conspicuously original history. The picturesque scenery, the majesty of nature, the slow pace of life, and the welcoming nature of its people also combine to make this region one of the most important tourist attractions in United States.
