Des Moines
The United States of America is a country in North America that extends from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean and shares land borders with Canada and Mexico. The United States is a federal constitutional republic, with its capital in Washington, D.C., District of Columbia.
Des Moines is the capital and the most populous city of the State of Iowa. It was incorporated on September 22, 1851, as Fort Des Moines, until it was shortened to Des Moines in 1857. It is also the county seat of Polk County. The five county metropolitan area is ranked 93rd in terms of population in the United States according to 2005 estimates from the United States Census Bureau.
Des Moines is a major center for the insurance industry and also has a sizeable financial services and publishing business base. The city is the headquarters for the Principal Financial Group, the Meredith Corporation, and Ruan Transportation. Des Moines was founded in May 1843 when Captain James Allen built a fort on the site where the Des Moines and Raccoon Rivers merge. The city is in the midst of major construction in the downtown area. The Des Moines metro area is also experiencing a boom, in particular the western suburbs.
Des Moines is located at the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 200.1 square kilometers. In the city the population was spread out with 24.8 percent under the age of 18, 10.6 percent from 18 to 24, 31.8 percent from 25 to 44, 20.4 percent from 45 to 64, and 12.4 percent who were 65 years of age or older. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males.
