High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
 
Yorktown High School is a public high school located in Arlington, Virginia. The school is recognized by the Department of Education as a Blue Ribbon School, which is an honor shared by numerous other schools throughout the country based on overall academic and social achievement in areas such as standardized test scores, teacher or student involvement, and the number of available AP, Advanced Placement and Honors courses.
 
The current principal of school is Dr. Raymond Pasi. All of Yorktown teams are named the Patriots and generally use the logo of the New England Patriots. The colors are Columbia Blue White. A recent Washington Post ranking of high schools placed Yorktown in the top ten academically challenging high schools in the Washington metropolitan area. The school was established in 1960. Yorktown is characterized by a large student body with most students participating heavily in several clubs and activities.
 
The athletics programs include baseball, basketball, men's, basketball, women's, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, men's and women's, tennis, men's and women's, track, volleyball, wrestling. Yorktown High School is a dynamic school that promotes academic achievement, high expectations, respect, unity, and safety. Yorktown High Schoolstrives to develop specific goals and high academic standards, using communication and commitment within a shared learning environment.
 
The mission of Yorktown High School is to offer an environment in which all students will acquire the necessary skills to become responsible thinkers who appreciate diversity and are productive citizens in their community.
