High school is a name used in some parts of the world and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11 and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
 
West Potomac High School is a public secondary school in Alexandria, Virginia. It is located on 6500 Quander Road and is part of Fairfax County public school. The school was established in the year 1984. Rima Vesalind is the principal of the school while blue, silver and white are the colors. West Potomac High School was formed by combining the student bodies and staff of Groveton and Fort Hunt High Schools in 1985.
 
The school's facilities have been expanded since the merger, with two wings added to the main building over the intervening years. The school is still a high performer in the Fairfax County school system. It includes a wide variety of academy and art programs. The school is very diverse, including people from virtually all races, incomes and areas. West Potomac is a fully accredited high school based on the standards of learning tests in Virginia. The average Scholastic aptitude test score in 2006 for West Potomac was 1,596 out of 2400.
 
In recent years, the school's Track and Field program, cross country, and also the Crew team have been very successful. West Potomac won Virginia football championships in 1989 and 1990. In the 2005 to 2006 season, the boys track team remained the Patriot District champions for the 5th year in a row, while the girls track team moved up to the second place standing, behind Lake Braddock. The team also won state championships in girls cross country in 1989 and 1990.
