West Mecklenburg
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
West Mecklenburg High School is located in western Mecklenburg County. The School opened in 1951. Charity Bell is the principal of the school. With a student body of approximately 1,751 students, the school consists of 62.8 percent African American, 20.7 percent Caucasian, 7 percent Asian, 7 percent Hispanic, 1.2 percent multi racial and 6 percent Native American. West Mecklenburg High School is comprised of 140 licensed or certified staff.
It houses the Foreign Language Immersion program for high school and also takes pride in its strong academic, fine arts and vocational curricula along with its outstanding extracurricular and athletic programs. The college prep curriculum includes advanced, academically gifted and advanced placement courses. The advanced technical program includes courses offered through a strong academy for medical science and the academy for tourism and travel.
The school provides an interscholastic athletic program that is provided for students in grades ninth through twelfth for those students who maintain a 2.0 grade point average for the preceding quarter and 85 percent attendance from the preceding semester. An evidence of a legal birth date must be provided. Sufficient insurance coverage must be in force. A physical examination is required prior to tryouts and can be obtained at school for a nominal fee during the fall or spring semester.
The mission of West Mecklenburg High School is to actively involve the entire school and community in achieving excellence through goal setting. The students and faculty blend rigorous academic studies and exchanges into lives lived fully and committed to making a difference. In this regard, knowledge, honor, courage, and service stand out as elements of character important in their daily lives and to the future of each student.
