High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.

Ward Melville is a top high school situated in east Setauket in the United States. The school was established in the year 1968. The mascot is patriot and the colors are green and gold. Ward Melville serves grades 10 to 12. The school is named after businessman and philanthropist Ward Melville. Thomas Colletti is the principal of the school. Each of the three grades currently has approximately 700 students.

The school offers 25 different Advanced Placement courses and another 25 college courses that are offered credit through several colleges and Universities. A well established program of foreign travel enhances the numerous course offerings. The art students actively participate in and receive meritorious recognition from local and state competitions and organizations. Their music groups have continually achieved local, state and national recognition. Ward Melville is home to several strong athletic teams, most notably girls volleyball who are two time state champions, boys volleyball, boys and girls cross country and track and many more.

The academically competitive student mathematics team has won numerous states, regional and national awards. In 2006, Ward Melville tied for the greatest number of Intel semifinalists in the United States. The Science Department aims to capture the enthusiasm of the students and direct their interests, curiosity and past experiences towards the understanding of biological and physical phenomena. Approximately three percent of the classes are awarded national merit scholarships and many more receive national awards from various sources.

The mission of Ward Melville High School is to prepare students to become confident, competent, ethical individuals and responsible citizens by creating a positive and nurturing school environment where staff, students, parents and the community work together to promote lifelong learning and to provide opportunities for students to reach their maximum potential.
