South Mecklenburg
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
South Mecklenburg was established in 1959, and is expanded to meet the tremendous residential, commercial, and industrial growth in South Charlotte. South Mecklenburg is one of eighteen pubilc high schools in Charlotte Mecklenburg. Its enrollment in grades 9-12 is approximately 2200. 85 percent of the 2005 graduates pursued further education. 70 percent of them attended four year universities and 15 percent, attended community colleges. Others entered the workforce or the military.
Dr. Maureen C. Furr is the principal of the school. South Mecklenburg’s 2006 class obtained 6.2 million in academic, athletic and music scholarships which is the largest amount in school history. South Mecklenburg was been named as a school of distinction in 2006. South Mecklenburg had achieved academic yearly progress goals for the year 2006. South Mecklenburg was the first AP, Advanced Placement Gold Certified High. The school offers 24 AP courses by highly certified AP teachers. South had 77 AP Diploma candidates in 2006.
South Mecklenburg High School helps to reach the students potential, to know and understand their demands, to foster in them a life long appreciation for learning, to instill in them a sense of honor, and to prepare them for lives of service to their community, country and world. The mission of the South Mecklenburg High School is to provide the highest quality interscholastic athletic experience for athletes, coaches, parents, students, and the school community, while continuously stressing academic success, sportsmanship and the benefits of wholesome athletic competition.
