Northern, Durham
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district. Northern high school is located in Durham. North Carolina. They organize instruction around a six period day and employ a wide variety of instructional strategies to address a variety of learning styles and needs. They are constantly striving to up-date their technological capabilities and feel fortunate to have been the only high school in the nation to be awarded an Apple Computer New Connections grant for this year. Their grant will help integrate technology into their International Studies program and is a cooperative effort with Duke University. For advanced students, Northern offers AP, Advance Placement courses for English Literature and Composition, Calculus AB and BC, Statistics, Environmental Science, Computer Science A and AB, Biology, Physics, Spanish, French, US History, European History, Chemistry, Latin, German and Studio Art. Northern High School offers a wide variety of athletic activities for students in football, basketball, tennis, golf, track and many other sports. The athletics programs include baseball, basketball, men's, basketball, women's, cheerleading, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, men's and women's, tennis, men's and women's, track, volleyball, wrestling. Northern high school is a dynamic school that promotes academic achievement, high expectations, respect, unity, and safety. Northern high schoolstrives to develop specific goals and high academic standards, using communication and commitment within a shared learning environment.
