The school was founded in 1972 and is part of the Montville Township School District. Montville High School competes in the Northern Hills Conference, an athletic conference of nineteen private and public high schools located in Essex, Morris and Passaic County Counties in Northern New Jersey.
Montville is assigned to the Suburban Division. Montville High School was the 49th ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 316 schools statewide, in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2006 cover story on the state's Top Public High Schools.
