High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
 
The Hewlett-Woodmere Public School District, Union Free School District 14, is located in the southwest section of Nassau County, New York and borders the New York City borough of Queens. Communities in the district include, in full or in part, Hewlett, Woodmere, Woodsburgh, North Woodmere, Valley Stream, Lynbrook, Hewlett Harbor, Hewlett Neck, and Hewlett Bay Park. There are approximately 3200 students enrolled in pre-K through 12th grade. The school district was created by the New York Legislature in 1898. As early as 1850 there was a one room school house in the area. As the area grew rapidly in the postwar period, 4 schools were built between 1949 and 1961.
 
Hewlett-Woodmere Middle School was recognized during the 1986-87 school year with the Blue Ribbon Award from the United States department of education, the highest honor that an American school can achieve. In 1998-99, the High School had 3 Intel science talent search semifinalists, 6 National merit scholarship finalists, mean SAT combined verbal and math scores for all students of 1,110 A percentage of students enrolled in advanced placement college-level courses that puts the district in long Island’s top ten. George W. Hewlett High School in 3 Intel student science search semi-finalists 4 national merit semi-finalists, 8 commended students, 100 percent scholar-athlete teams named by public school athletics association. 
 
The mission of Hewlett-Woodmere Public School is to provide an environment in which all students will acquire the necessary skills to become responsible thinkers who appreciate diversity and are productive citizens in their community.
