High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district. Herndon High School is a public high school in Herndon, Virginia.
 
Herndon High School that serves grades 9-12, is a part of the FCPS, Fairfax County Public Schools system. Herndon High School serves the communities of Herndon and the northern part of Reston. The school has approximately 2400 students, with over 80 countries represented. Its mascot is the Hornet and its rival is South Lakes High School in Reston. The school assistance principal is Waddell Linda and principal is Frances Ivey.
 
Herndon High School began in 1911 at 901 Locust Street. In 1930, its enrollment was seventy-one students and they offered classes such as home economics, agriculture, and business education. In 1942, they opened the first school cafeteria in Fairfax County at Herndon High School and they began offering classes in industrial arts. In the early 1950’s, they expanded the building to hold more students. In 1967 the High School moved to its current Bennett Street location, leaving Herndon Intermediate School at Locust Street with 650 students and 39 teachers.
 
In the 2005-06 seasons, the Herndon High School basketball team finished second in the state championship. In the 2005-06 seasons junior Abraham Dagnachew placed 3rd in the 1600m and 2nd in the 800m in the AAA outdoor track and field state meet and also a two time state champ. Herndon High School is a fully accredited high school based on the standards of learning tests in Virginia.
 
Herndon Finishes 13th in Wachovia Cup for 2005-2006. The Wachovia Cup recognizes the top overall VHS, Virginia High School League Lathletic programs in Virginia each year.  The mission of Herndon High School is to enhance the students' academic, artistic, social, and technological skills to meet the challenges of a rapidly changing and increasingly diverse society.
