Granby
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Granby High School is a four-year comprehensive public high school in Norfolk, Virginia. The high school is part of the Norfolk Public Schools system. It is the only high school in the district that offers an International Baccalaureate program. Opened in 1939, the school was previously known as Granby Street High School, reflecting the street on which it is located. Both the street and the school are named after John Manners, Marquess of Granby, a hero of the Seven Years War. The twenty-four acre tract on which Granby was built was once part of the Talbot Plantation before the property was donated to the city by Winton W. Talbot.
Granby High School also has a small crew team, the only one in the public school's history to compete at SRA Nationals. The crew team shares their boathouse with Maury High School. Granby Crew has competed at regional, state, national and international regattas such as the Stotesbury Cup. Granby High School operates on an academy system where the student body and faculty are divided into four distinct groups. While the principal oversees the school as a whole and focuses on building-wide issues, an assistant principal administers each academy.
Students benefit from being a part of these smaller schools within Granby. Since they ideally remain within the same academy for their entire academic career, this organization allows teachers, counselors, administrators, parents and students to forge closer relationships and ensure greater opportunities for success for the children. The goal of the Granby High School is to offer the quality training that is vital if students wish to attain the skills required to gain an aggressive edge in the business world today.
