High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
 
Glenbard West High School, or GBWHS, and locally referred to as West, is a public four-year high school located at the corner of Ellyn Avenue and Crescent Boulevard in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, a western suburb of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. Jane Thorsen is the principal of the school. Hilltoppers is the Mascot of the school.
 
GBWHS is part of Glenbard Township High School District 87, which also includes Glenbard North High School, Glenbard South High School, and Glenbard East High School. Glenbard as it was originally named was constructed in 1922, atop Honeysuckle Hill, overlooking picturesque Lake Ellyn. Built with dark red brick, the building was built with castle-like design, complete with a turret and other minor castle details.
 
In 2005, Glenbard West had an average composite score of 22.3, and graduated 96.4 percent of its senior class. Glenbard West has not made adequate yearly progress on the Prairie State achievements examination, a state test part of the no child left behind act. Glenbard West was ranked 699 out of the nation's top 1036 schools by Newsweek in 2005. Glenbard West is currently categorized as a division 7A school. The football team, which won its only state championship on 1983 plays at Duchon Field, built in 1923, which in 1980 was named after Head football coach from 1960-76, Bill Duchon.
 
Their sports include baseball, basketball, golf, soccer, and wrestling for boys and cheerleading, badminton, track, volleyball etc for girls. In 1964-65, there was a complete renovation of Glenbard West, including the addition of new choral, band, and physical science facilities. Glenbard West’s mission is to prepare the student to be a productive citizen. Glenbard West equipped to challenge the future. They use a variety of techniques, resources, and technology to gather information.
