George Washington (Charleston)
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district. George Washington Charleston was opened in 1965. George Washington Senior High School is a public school in Charleston, West Virginia, USA. The school, which serves grades 9-12, is a part of Kanawha County Schools. James R. Vickers is the principal of the school. The school serves the upscale South Hills neighborhood of the city and several incorporated areas nearby. The school is located at 1522 Tennis Club Road and it is one of eight public high schools in Kanawha County. The school's motto is self direction, flexible scheduling and independent study and to provide students with opportunities to direct them. George Washington is the most successful school in the state, when it comes to academics. The school consistently wins awards as a national school of excellence and in 2004 and 2006 it was named by Newsweek magazine as one of the 1,000 best high schools in America. In 2005 it was the only high school in West Virginia to win a blue ribbon for excelling in No Child Left Behind requirements. George Washington, however, does not only excel in academics. Many sports and academic teams have won numerous awards throughout the years. The goal is producing academically successful students by giving it a college like atmosphere and putting more responsibility on the students with a combined development of local educators, members of the West Virginia Department of Education and faculty from the Ohio State University.
