High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.

GMHS, George Mason High School was established in 1952. George Mason High School is a comprehensive public high school located in unincorporated Fairfax County, Virginia. The school serves all of the city of Falls Church. The school serves more than 800 students in grades 8-12, making it one of the few 5-year high schools in the nation. The school is a part of the Falls Church City Public Schools. The school's campus is actually not in Falls Church, but in Fairfax County. In the early 1960's the City of Falls Church sold a square mile of land to Fairfax county. Robert W. Snee is the principal of the school.

The school is widely known for its International Baccalaureate program, which dates back to 1971. More than 80 percent of upperclassmen take courses in the IB, International Baccalaureate curriculum, and 20 percent of that attempt to earn the IB diploma. 95 percent of students who attempt to do so succeed in earning the International Baccalaureate diploma. The school has finished in the top 25 since Newsweek began its annual ranking and has finished as high as 2nd.

GMHS consistently ranks among the top schools in the nation. It was the first Virginia school to offer the challenging International Baccalaureate curriculum, which offers students the possibility of earning college credit while still in high school. George Mason athletics include different types of sports such as girls’ soccer, boys’ lacrosse and girls’ lacrosse. Beginning with the 2005 school year, the school had moved from its traditional grade 9-12 configuration and had served students in grades 8-12.

The mission of GMHS, George Mason High School is to provide their students with opportunities to obtain the skills needed to become productive, responsible citizens, capable of making positive contributions to a changing society.
