First Colonial
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
First Colonial High School is a high school in Virginia Beach, Virginia. First Colonial opened in 1966 by splitting students out of the former Virginia Beach High School, whose name was then changed to Virginia Beach Junior High School. Its mascot is the Patriots. First Colonial runs a magnet program called the Legal Studies Academy, created to offer students a way to explore employment in the legal field. The school also has a joint Navy JROTC program with Cox High School, its traditional rival for First Colonial in sporting events and competitions.
First Colonial is one of five Virginia Beach high schools ranked in the top 1200 in Newsweek's 2006 ranking of American high schools. First Colonial is one of three public Virginia Beach high schools to have a club-level crew team, sharing rowing facilities with Princess Anne students. The First Colonial Crew Club competes in state and district regattas.
First Colonial departments include business, clinic, English, fine arts, foreign, languages, gifted services, guidance, library, marketing, mathematics, military science, physical and health education, science, social studies, special education, technology, education, work and family studies etc. Their Clubs include Animation Club, Art Honor Society, Aware Club, Book of the Month Club, Crew Club, Debutante Club, Earth Club, Environmental Club, Film Club, French Honor Society, Guitar Club, Indoor Soccer Club and Prayer Club.
Along with Navy JROTC and crew, First Colonial has a state champion and national competing Mock Trial team. The mission of First Colonial High School, in a shared commitment with students, family, faculty and community, is to ensure an unrelenting focus on student learning using innovative and effective teaching methods combined with alternative programs.
