High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
 
Denbigh High School is a high school in Newport News, Virginia. Denbigh carries grades nine through twelve and has an enrollment of 1922 students. Which includes 962 males and 812 females. There are 51 percent African-American, 35 percent Caucasian, 8 percent Hispanic, and 5 percent Asian or Pacific Islander. This school was rated fully accredited by the Virginia Department of Education for the 2005 to 2006 school year. Denbigh is the only host to the Aviation program in all of Newport News Public Schools. Mr. Michael W. Evans, Sr. is the Principal of the school.
 
Denbigh High school is represented by their mascot, the patriot. Their colors are red, white, and blue. It also has top rated sports teams throughout the region. This school was opened in 1966 with grades 8 through 11 and the Junior Class of that year became the first Senior Class the following year. For a time Newport News had 5 year high schools and Denbigh had 8-12th grades. The class of 1968 presented, as a memorial, a step from the first Denbigh school. Ms. Molly Cochran is the Guidance Director of the school. Denbigh High Counselors are specially trained to help students and parents determine exactly the right courses to provide students with the background for any career.
 
Denbigh is also one of two sites in Newport News that hosts SAT testing, and also hosts the ACT testing. Denbigh High School and other have a telecommunications program. It allows interested student to go out and shoot live football and basketball games. Students experience reporting, producing, camera work, editing etc. The choral and band programs have won numerous awards in local, regional, state, and national competitions. Renowned bass guitarist Victor Wooten graduated from Denbigh High.
 
Denbigh High School is dedicated to educating and preparing all students for the future through a challenging instructional program, promoting high expectations for each student in a caring, safe, and orderly environment.
