DeKalb School of the Arts
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
DeKalb School of the Arts, DSA was established in 1984 at Avondale High School and now is a self contained High School. DSA has a full-time staff of dedicated teachers working with Principal Susan McCauley to insure an education for a lifetime in theater, dance, music, technical theater, orchestra and video. In addition, the students in the program are offered the opportunity for individual voice, dance and musical instruction.
The program has graduated more than 1,000 students, many of whom have gone on to colleges like NYU, Stanford, Notre Dame, Howard, North Carolina and Dartmouth. Many have gone on to careers in the performing arts, while others have chosen lives in engineering, medicine, teaching and other fields. Susan McCauley is the Principal of the school. Rodney Swanson is the Assistant Principal of the school.
DeKalb School of the arts mission is to nurture and support excellence in education and the arts by providing each student with a broad based course of study that includes the knowledge, discipline and experience our students need to achieve their academic, professional and personal goals.
