High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.

Coronado High School, CHS is a four-year high school established in 1913. CHS is the only high school in the Coronado Unified School District and has an enrollment of approximately 960 students. The District serves the students residing in the city of Coronado, dependents of North Island Naval Air Station, Naval Amphibious Base, and Silver Strand Navy Housing. Karl Mueller is the Principal of the school.

In 1996, CHS received the distinction of being named a California Distinguished School an honor bestowed upon fewer than 10 percent of the schools in the state. In 1998, CHS was named a National Blue Ribbon School one of only 124 public schools in the United States. Criteria for National Blue Ribbon and California Distinguished School honor consist of successful teaching and learning, high standards for all students, rigorous graduation requirements, strong family and community involvement, partnerships with the business community, safe and clean school environments, and effective use of technology. In 1999, CHS was one of only 17 high schools nationwide named a New American High School.

Coronado High School students are exceptionally fortunate that the school offers a wide variety of team sports for both boys and girls. Students are encouraged to get into programs at the Junior Varsity level as freshmen and sophomores so they can develop the skills necessary to represent the school in interscholastic Varsity sports.

It is their goal to challenge their students with a rigorous academic core curriculum, and an exciting array of co-curricular programs and offerings. They are committed to doing everything they can to help their students succeed while maintaining the integrity of both their academic and co-curricular programs. They encourage all students to become involved in school life. To that end, they offer many co-curricular activities, such as the boys’ and girls’ athletic programs, academic competitions, a variety of student clubs, many visual and performing arts programs, and student government.
