Walt Whitman
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11 and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Walt Whitman High School is a top high school situated in the United States. Walt Whitman High School located in Bethesda, Maryland, is a public secondary institution serving roughly the western part of Bethesda which is an unincorporated suburban area of Washington, DC, in the affluent Montgomery County, Maryland. The school was established in the year 1962. The mascot for the school is Viking and the colors are black, white and Columbia blue. Dr. Alan Goodwin is the principal of this school.
The Black and White is a national, regional and state award winning newspaper that is student financed and student run. In addition to informing students, teachers, parents and community members of relevant issues and events, it also provides an open forum for an exchange of student ideas. It was established in 1961 and produces 13 issues each academic year. The Student Government Association is the official representative body of Walt Whitman students and an avenue of communication between students and staff.
The school curriculum, as well as curricular and extra curricular activities, includes experiences that enable students to realize personal and civic goals which allow them to mature and to be responsible members of our constantly changing society. The instrumental music department oversees 6 standard ensembles and is directed by Chris Allen and Terry Alvey. Whitman produces a musical student directed talent show, and a spring play. The students are encouraged to participate in various sporting events such as swimming, basketball, hockey, baseball, volleyball, rugby and many more.
The mission of Walt Whitman High School is to prepare students for the rigorous demands of the academic and work worlds so that they may reach their potential as self directed, creative and socially responsible individuals. This mission will be accomplished through excellence in teaching and learning, made stronger through active partnerships with parents and the community.
