High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.

Wakefield High School is one of three high schools located in Arlington, Virginia and is just one block away from Alexandria. The school was established in the year 1952. Doris Jackson is the principal of this school. The nickname for the school is warriors and the colors are Kelly green, white and black. The warriors are represented by an image of a knight holding a sword, which was preceded by an Indian head until 2003.  There are 140 teachers and a very diverse group of 1488 students within its walls as of 2005.  It is a fully accredited high school based on Virginia's standard of learning examinations.

Wakefield is the only high school requiring all seniors to participate in a senior project prior to graduation. It also offers the Spanish immersion program. The school has a strong taste for students to participate in artistic activities. Instrumental, choral, theatrical, and visual arts are prominent in the school's atmosphere. There has always been a push for students to take Advanced placement, AP courses, but there has been a stronger push in recent years since the inception of the AP network.

The school offers many opportunities for students to participate in various clubs and activities to support their academics and challenge them to learn and grow outside the classroom. Such activities include nationally recognized, National Honor Society, Spanish National Honor Society, French National Honor Society, Future Business and Leaders of America. Along with all this, the students are also encouraged to participate in sporting events as well.

The mission of Wakefield High School is to prepare students to become confident, competent, ethical individuals and responsible citizens by creating a positive and nurturing school environment where staff, students, parents and the community work together to promote lifelong learning and to provide opportunities for students to reach their maximum potential.
