Vestal
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Vestal Senior High School is a public high school located in Vestal, New York. It is part of the Vestal Central School District which encompasses 57 square miles just west of Binghamton in the Southern Tier of New York. It is a four year comprehensive school which annually receives both national and state recognition for excellence in education. The high school offers Varsity and Junior Varsity sports as well as musical opportunities in band, chorus, and orchestra. There are also clubs for students accommodating a wide range of interests. Catherine Hepler is the principal of the school. Their colors are green and gold.
Vestal High School is one of the only two schools in the area to offer IB, the International Baccalaureate program. It has been an IB World School since January 1998. AP, the Advanced Placement courses are also offered. Vestal High School was ranked number 405 on the 2006 Newsweek list of the top 1,000 high schools in the United States based on participation of students in AP and IB programs. Many students have qualified for the National Merit Scholarship Program with a total of six finalists this year. Vestal High School also has a history of students who, after graduation, have attended Ivy League schools. In the past year, many Vestal students have been accepted into schools such as Brown University, Cornell University, and Johns Hopkins University.
The Honors and IB Programs began in Vestal in the 1999-2000 school year. The Vestal Honors Diploma was modeled after the IB Diploma. It is more commonly chosen among students than the IB Diploma because of the greater flexibility that it offers. But the IB Diploma does have worldwide recognition while the Vestal Honors Diploma is only easily recognized in the region. Recently, the Board of Education has been considering dropping the Honors Diploma program.
The Vestal High School aims on targeting the success of their students. The institution is renowned due to qualities like supportive learning environment, respected and enthusiastic staff and faculty members, and the capability to meet the needs of the community’s wide ranging requirements.
