St. Petersburg
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
St. Petersburg High School, founded in 1898, is a secondary school located in St. Petersburg, Florida. The school's current building, a historic landmark, was built in 1926 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. The school previously occupied several other historic locations around St. Petersburg, including a location at Mirror Lake. It is sometimes referred to as St. Petersburg Central High School.
The IB, International Baccalaureate Diploma program at St. Petersburg High School, the oldest of its kind in Florida, has achieved considerable academic prestige. The current principal is Al Bennett. IB diploma graduates automatically qualify for the Florida Bright Futures scholarship. The class of 2006 had 9 National Merit Finalists. A 2003 Newsweek magazine survey of the top 100 high schools in the United States placed St. Pete High School at 25. In 2005, the survey ranked the school as 35. In 2006, the Newsweek survey ranked the school as at 63.
St. Petersburg High School is highly academic and offers not only several Advanced Placement courses, but a wide variety of athletic and extra curricular opportunities for all students.
