South Lakes
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
South Lakes High School is the primary high school for the community of Reston in Fairfax County, Virginia. The school is part of Fairfax County Public Schools and has about 1,500 students, in grades 9 through 12. The school was opened in 1979. The Principal name is Bruce Butler.
The school's curriculum offers special education courses, remedial coursework, standard courses, and college-level advanced courses. Advanced coursework is offered in the form of the International Baccalaureate program. The Advanced Placement program was phased out at the end of the 2002-2003 school year. The school also has 16 other administrators, including assistant administators for each grade.
The school's mascot is the Seahawk and the school colors are royal blue, kelly green and white. South Lakes' cross-town rival is Herndon High School. The school newspaper is named the Sentinel. South Lakes High School is a fully accredited high school based on the Standards of Learning tests in Virginia.
At South Lakes High School, their mission is to provide a learning environment where students are challenged to reach their individual potential in the acquisition of knowledge and the development of personal, cultural and democratic values essential for future success.
