Solon
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
Solon High School is a public high school located in Solon, Ohio, a southeastern suburb of Cleveland in the northeast Ohio region. The school was established in 1898. George Steyer is the principal of this school. The school color is Blue and White with Gold trim and the mascot is comet. The school is comprised of grades 9 to12 and is the only high school in the Solon city school system, which also includes two middle schools. They are the Solon middle school for grades 7 to 8 and Orchard middle school for grades 5 to 6 and four elementary schools.
The student body is approximately 1,600 students while the faculty roster includes approximately two hundred teachers, administrators and staff. The school has many academic teams, including science Olympiad, academic challenge and future problem solvers. It has consistently ranked in the top 150 public high schools in the United States as rated by Newsweek in the year 2006. Similarly, the school district consistently ranks in the upper eschelon of state and national standardized testing.
The school curriculum, as well as curricular and extra curricular activities, includes experiences that enable students to realize their potential. The athletic programs compete in the Western Reserve Conference against other local area high schools. Solon's wrestling team won the Ohio state championship in 1990 and their football team was state runner up in 2001. The basketball team won back to back district championships in 2005 and 2006.
The mission of Solon High School is to provide their students equal opportunities to grow along with all round development. It helps the students to understand their true potential and helps them to acquire knowledge in a unique way resulting in the development of values which are essential for future success.
