Science Academy of South Texas
High school is a name used in some parts of the world, and particularly in North America, to describe the last segment of compulsory secondary education. It is preceded by primary education. High school is also the name used to describe the institution in which the final stage of compulsory education takes place. In the United States, high schools generally consist of grades 9, 10, 11, and 12, although the inclusion of grade 9 varies by school district.
The Science Academy of South Texas, also known as SciTech, is a high school in Mercedes, Texas. In 2006, it was placed 11th on Newsweek's Top 1200 High Schools list. The school serves as an alternative to larger municipal high schools for students interested in pursuing careers in science, engineering, and technology. Being a public magnet school, open enrollment has been the school's policy since 2002, although application is required. Lately however, the increased number of applicants has forced the school to create a wait list for the first time in its history. The Science Academy of South Texas is part of the South Texas Independent School District. The Science Academy of South Texas has notable partnerships with Rice University and Baylor College of Medicine.
The Science Academy participates in UIL competitions on a weekly basis and has won numerous awards in every category. Science Academy is also known for its great teachers and its intensive curriculum which most students say has prepared them well for college. The nine-week grade average will be based on the following grade weights, Eighty percent class work and homework average of all work produced in class and homework drawings.
Individual assignments may have differing grade weights within this category. Quizzes and planning thumbnail sketches are weighted at one half that of a critical essay or drawing assignment. Some long-term projects have effectively greater weight in that such a project may receive multiple grades such as a grade for use of a specific design principle, a grade for use of a specific drawing technique, a grade for creativity in interpretation of theme, etc. School is committed to success, challenging students and staff to achieve their potential. Their mission is to establish and maintain a caring, positive and safe environment in which students may maximize their academic growth.
